I'm looking for a John Beard born in Ireland about 1735...I find information on him in Cumberland County, PA. He has 3-4 sons (William, Lewis, John, Moses) and a set of twin daughters (Agnes & Hannah) who marry a set of twin boys (McKibben). In 1779 S.C. Census Moses lives in the 96th district, William marries Eleanor Irwin and dies in 1809 (TN), Lewis? (might have died at a young age; I can't seem to find a lot about him; John Jr. marries Margaret Blackstock in S.C. and move to Tennessee (TN) and dies in 1826; Agnes and Hannah born Nov 1770 marry twin brothers McKibben and end up in Ohio, Seneca Co. I'm looking for info on John Srs. wife, we think her name is Agnes and more info on John's ancestors from Ireland. Drop me a line. Thanks

Could you tell me about the Buchanans that are mentioned in this book, please? My Bairds were assoicated with the Buchanans of Franklin Co., PA. In fact, our Bairds are associated with Pres. Buchanan. Thanks, Carol Rose ---------- Re: James Smith, Frontier Patriot Hello Carol, This is a very nice book recently authored by Lt. Thomas Price Smith, a direct descendant of Col. James Smith, and related to the Bard family. Mr. Smith did all the art work himself for this book, and he may be offering a PDF cd-rom disc version sometime in the future. He has graciously agreed to allow us to offer inexpensive SIGNED copies of his book to our genealogy friends on the BAIRD, BEARD, BARD mail lists, and interested parties visiting our Old And Rare Books web site. You can learn more about this book here: Col. James Smith The book does mention a George Buchanan on page 87 in relation to a trip made with Daniel Boone to St. Louis. But I'm not sure if there are any other connections to the Buchanan family. Please let me know if you are interested in purchasing a signed copy. Thank you for your interest and inquiry concerning this book, Curtis Bard

This may be of interest to some:
St. Darerca, of Ireland, a sister of St. Patrick. (Apostle of Ireland, born at Kilpatrick, near Dumbarton, in Scotland, (debatable) in the year 387; died at Saul, Downpatrick, Ireland, 17 March, 493.) Much obscurity attaches to her history, and it is not easy to disentangle the actual facts of her history from the network of legend which medieval writers interwove with her acts. However, her fame, apart from her relationship to Ireland's national apostle, stands secure as not only a great saint but as the mother of many saints. When St. Patrick visited Bredach, as we read in the "Tripartite Life," he ordained Aengus mac Ailill, the local chieftain of Moville, now a seaside resort for the citizens of Derry. St. Darerca had two daughters, Eiche of Kilglass and Lalloc of Senlis. Her first husband was Restitutus the Lombard, after whose death she married Chonas the Briton. By Restitutus she was mother of Sechnall of Dunshaughlin; Nectan of Killunche, and of Fennor (near Slane); of Auxilius of Killossey (near Naas, County Kildare); of St. Diarmaid of Druim-corcortri (near Navan); of Dabonna, Mogornon, Drioc, Luguat, and Coemed Maccu Baird (the Lombard) of Cloonshaneville, near Frenchpark, County Roscommon. Secundinus, i.e. Seachnall Mac Ua Baird, the son of Patrick's sister, Darerca, Bishop of Ard-Macha (Armagh).... Yielded his spirit on the twenty-seventh of November, in the seventy-fifth year of his age. Then follows one of O'Donovan's "copious notes", again transcribed word for word: "Seachnall Mac Ua Baird.-- According to all the ancient Irish authorities, he was the son of Liemania, otherwise called Darerca, one of the sisters of St. Patrick, by Restitus the Lombard, and the author of a hymn in praise of St. Patrick, published by Colgan in Trias Thaum, p.211-- see Ussher's Primordia, p.284, and Lanigan's Eccl. Hist. Irel., vol i, pp 259, 271, where it is shewn from various authorities that he was a suffragan bishop to St. Patrick, and that his principal church was Domhnach Sechnail, i.e. the Church of Seachnall, now Dunshaughlin, in Meath, where he was placed by St. Patrick about the year 443, and died in 448..." SURNAME or Subject of Query: Bard Book Errata
Sent: 17/09 07:41 PM

Here is a word of caution for anyone using Seilhamer's book as a basis for their genealogy. He has apparently crossed two lines and which has led to much completely erroneous information in my family and I am sure many others. While I have not yet been able to read the book for myself, I have, within the last year, uncovered correspondence between my great grandfather, Edmund Janes Baird (Lock Haven, PA) and a first cousin once removed of his named Anna Hamlin Weikel (author of the series of three children's books written around 1909 and referred to as the "Betty Baird Series").
Anna had taken notes on Seilhamer's book and says in her letter that in the portion which she says is "From the Baird Genealogy", that John Baird b. January 27, 1699 and d. Feb 7, 1747 married a woman named Avis (we now believe to be Avis Bowne). He says their son, William married Margaret Riley (some other sources say O'Reilly) and moved to Dunnstable Township, Northumberland County (now Clinton County and also previously Lycoming County and the area was also referred to as Liberty in 1792). He says this William died in 1794 and that William's children were William, Zebulon, Benjamin, and Joseph.
Apparently Seilhamer has melded two Williams into one. John and Avis did have a son named William. He did marry a Margaret Reilly or O'Reilly and he did die in 1794. However, this William, according to "Documents Relating to the Colonial History of the State of New Jersey, First Series Vol. XXX, Valhi of Calendar of Wills" died in New Jersey. I have since learned (but not followed through to prove) that this William's descendants were among those who left New Jersey for North Carolina and include N.C. Governor Zebulon Baird Vance.
The other William Baird, who is my direct ancestor, died in Liberty, Dunnstable Township, then Northumberland County (now Clinton) in 1792. His will substantiates this and mentions his wife at his death as Tabitha. He did own the acreage Seilhamer refers to, did have sons William, Zebulon, Benjamin (my direct), and Joseph (also 5 or 6 daughters). Whether he was the William Baird who was appointed 2nd Lieut. in Capt William Work's Company, 12th Reg. Pena Line, has not been proven sufficiently to me yet, although he is attributed with this distinction.
If this information as Anna portrays it, is accurate, (and perhaps you would be able to verify this) then Seilhamer did intertwine the two Williams which has long been a source of confusion in my family since Edmund Janes Baird relied on this information via Anna as proven and the basis for his genealogy claims.
To make matters more confusing, many of us in my direct line, believe that these two Williams are actually related. We believe that my William was the brother of the John Baird mentioned above making him the other Wm's uncle. We have been striving for years (some 30 years) to prove this connection. If any Bairds out there have anything to shed any light on this connection, we would be eternally grateful.
In any event, as with all information that you run across that is not primary source in nature, be very careful. Even a noted historian/genealogist like Seilhamer can make mistakes.

SURNAME or Subject of Query: Robert Beard, Baird, Bard
Sent: 06/09 03:14 AM

Curtis, the following is my Beard (Baird, Bard) line that I am researching:

Robert Beard was born ca 1830 in Ky. He married March 2, 1852 in Fulton County KY to Mary Jane Taylor. On the 1850 census of Graves County KY Robert is living with Lydia Beard who I think is his mother. She is 59 years old. Robert and Mary Jane Taylor Beard's first child was Lydia Beard who was born in 1854-56 in Fulton Co KY. This Lydia Beard married Thomas Dowdy . Lydia and Thomas Dowdy had a daughter Lucy Ellen Dowdy who was born 1882 in Hickman Co KY. This is my grandmother. Thomas and Lydia Beard Dowdy died ca 1888 and Lucy Ellen Dowdy was raised by Robert Beard and Mary Jane Taylor Beard. There may have been other Dowdy children who were raised by other family members. Robert Beard served in Co.L 5th Tn Infantry I think. On the 1860 census of Fulton Co Lydia Beard (the elder Lydia)age 79 was living with John G. Beard and Robert and Mary Jane taylor Beard were on that census with their daughter Lydia who was either 4 or 6 years old.. I believe that Robert Beard is related somehow to Taylor Beard and Lydia Beard who were from this same area. If anyone can help me with this I would greatly appreciate it. This family has been a bear to research.
Robert and Mary Jane Taylor Beard had Children:
Lydia b 1856
Robert b1866
R.H. b 1867
William b 1870
Martha F. b. 1875
Daniel Webster b. 1877
Thanks again. Janet Morgan Brown

Mary Jane Taylor is (I am pretty sure) the granddaughter of Littleberry Taylor and Sarah (Sally) Roper. Mary Jane Taylor was living with Sally Taylor on the 1850 census and is age 9. Mary Jane Taylor was 13 when she married Robert Beard according to the marriage license in Fulton Co KY. Robert Beard was ca 25 years old. Thanks again. Janet Brown

Parkie,
I'll put this info up as a query on the Mail List and the Bard Query page.
You can do this yourself here:
http://pub.alxnet.com/guestbook?id=1016230
And/or by sending a message to the mail List(s) here:
BARD-L@rootsweb.com
BAIRD-L@rootsweb.com
BEARD-L@rootsweb.com
(Use the To: designation instead of the Bcc: designation if you "cross post" to these mail lists within the same message.)
(Its actually better to do it that way (post it yourself), as everyone will be able to benefit from both the query data and the query answer, if one is forthcoming, and the reply will be directed to you instead of to me.)
If you have an actual GEDCOM file from a computer genealogy program, please feel free to send it along to me as an attachment to an e-mail message, for inclusion in our Master GEDCOM look-up file.
Thanks!

Dear Parkie,
My goodness, Yes! we are all interested in you and your line if you have Bards, Bairds or Beards in your lineage. Our Master GEDCOM is ever increasing, so your Bards might show up at any time. I'll put up a query for you on the Mail Lists and on our Bard Family Genealogy Query page and maybe someone will connect with you. (Come back to both of them about once every month or so, and put up a new query, and then the archives will reflect your data in a timely way, and someone may find it later.)
Don't forget to send us your GEDCOM file, and we will merge it with our burgeoning master file.
And, if you have a male Bard, Baird or Beard living relative you can also participate in our DNA study!
Thanks for making contact, and thanks for your interest in Bard family genealogy...

SURNAME or Subject of Query: The Bards of Carroll's Delight
Sent: 23/08 06:26 PM

Hi Paula,
In reply to your e-mail concerning my branch of the Bard family: My particular branch of the Bard family is called the "Bard's of Carroll's Delight." This line is believed to have come over to the US from Ireland around 1740 (but we have not substantiated the passage with ship passenger records, or other official sources) with our immigrant ancestor being one Archibald BEARD (BARD). Archibald is said (from a old book notation, but again not confirmed by original sources) to be "The son of David, who was the son of William." Archibald settled in York (now Adams) County PA, and later relocated to Franklin County PA.

He (Archibald) had three sons; Richard BARD, William BARD and David BARD. Although the surname can be found written BAIRD, BEARD, or BARD at different times early on in the US, at some point the spelling was standardized to "BARD." First son Richard BARD and his family and others were captured by the Delaware Indians in 1758, and their infant son John BARD was killed. Richard later escaped and ransomed his wife Catherine back from her captors.

If your family history mentions origins in Pennsylvania and/or has an oral tradition that describes the Richard BARD captivity story, or his poem about that event, there may be a good possibility that your line stems from the Bards of Carroll's Delight.

Our Bard Family Web Page is not however devoted only to this line, but is for the information of all BARD, BEARD, and BAIRD lines. So feel free to utilize our Query Web Page and or BARD-L Mail List as displayed by the links below. As administrator, I've subscribed you to our Mail list and posted your query for you. If you wish to change your query, such as adding more detail or asking a different question, then please just repost. If you wish to unsubscribe from the Mail list at any time just follow the instructions sent to you. Be sure to check every so often to see if anyone from your line has posted.

You never know when someone related to your line will recognize your information and connect with you. We encourage people to share both their own queries and their responses to the queries of others with all interested parties by posting all but the most private or confidential of information on the Mail List, and/or on the Query Web page. DNA genealogy may someday reveal which of the various surname or spelling variations of the name had common origins back in the old world.

We also have some interesting developments occurring in regards to our new BARD, BEARD, BAIRD DNA genetic genealogy surname project, our new Master GEDCOM program, and our new look-up list/query program. If you would like information about any of these programs, please see the links below. If you have any additional questions or concerns about any of them, please let me know.

Thanks for making contact with your inquiry and for your interest in Bard family genealogy,
Best regards,
Curtis Bard
