Mira Condenao! A Million thanks for the Cuatro. I restrung it last weekend (took me a few beers), and now it sings... Have been doing some non-traditional stuff and am looking to get a pick-up for it (what do your experts recommend ?). Will then do the strange music stuff you know and love... Hope the family is OK, and we need to get together again soon and record some more material. Be Well Brother! Joe Vazquez www.soundclick.com/Vazquez

It's ashamed that adults can't be more like the innocent children in the world that do not seem to see color or race. The USA is "THE" melting pot for "ALL" imigrants who want to make a better life for their families. Anyone who does not like it, should go back to where they originally came from or their ancestors...HELL!

should we be surprised by the comments made by racists in this country? (esto aqui no es como lo pintan). unfortunately the experiences i've been through here in america..are the same ones my children are going through now. when i eslisted in the marines in the early 70s i was physicaly beaten by the di's, and just generally treated like the red headed step child. my son experienced similar things in the army. our jobs are no different. we need to turn to ourselves for enpowerment..because the racists in this country are not going to help. and there are more of them than we are led to believe by the media.capitalism is a great concept.but,it has too many hatemongerers at the helm. i know that my experience is the same as many other latinos in this country.. so,i won't bore you anymore. (trabajen fuerte y ahorren su dinero)this way you will be paving the way to our children's future. saludos a todos mis hermanos latinos. pa'lante.

Dear Don Jibaro, This teacher must have been raised up in a very unhappy home. The bitterness that's seeded in her sprouts up in ugly weeds like that letter she wrote degrading the Puerto Rican people. Obviously she doesn't realize that she's destroyed herself and her career as an educator.

Concho man, when I was about 8 years old and living in Brooklyn, I remember drinking from a water fountain in a city park. Across from me was a tall white man with his little boy who was about my age and they were sitting on the park bench. He was definitely whispering something to the boy. Suddenly as I'm drinking the boy comes up to me and says rather loudly "hurry up and finish, you stick." The father immediately calls him back and says "No, No not stick, I said to say Spic." I had never heard that word before and didn't know what it meant until my older brother explained it to me when I told him someone called me that. The point is, ignorance breeds ignorance and thus you have this "teacher" Jan Hall. Concho man, to think this person was hired to "educate" young people is a very scary thought. Also, all she got is a suspension without pay? If that ignorant letter were written about Jews, or African Americans, she would have been terminated already. Is this pending an investigation? For what! The letter is there in black and white. PA FUERA!!! Concho man.

I agree with other opinions. This teacher needs to go back to elementary school to learn some history, learn about different cultures. Doesn't she know that this country was made out of immigrants and that is not going to change. She is probably not aware that she is also an immigrant's descendant. She does not look american indian to me !!! Definitely, an ignorant and racist person, and should not be allowed to teach at ANY school.

I asked some friends of mine that are Puerto Rican If they grew up with a lot of family problems. James said his Aunts were a bunch of horny ****** but other than that they were normal. Another friend that was listening in on us said they were f******g nuts. So if were so horny and nuts what can we do about it as a concerned person. It all started when both parents needed to work, everyone was so tired from working that we stopped meeting at my grandma'as house on Sunday. Do these problems affect the people of the Island? has anyone been affected by the uranium and other metals that were left behind after all the target practice on Vieques. Could they have been blown around by the wind or ocean currents. who monitors and looks into these things. I hope some of you with the giant brains will put your brains together and analize these questions so that our little country may be an example for others to follow.

Es obvio that this teacher is a poor excuse for an educator. She appears to be "culturally deprived" as she does not even know her "American" history. She is surely does not meet the "highly qualified status" mandated by NCLB. I think she should be court ordered to go live in Puerto Rico, for no less than 6 months, take graduate courses on "diversity", work with the people, and teach classes in English. She might be competent to do that! Thanks, Idali

We are all children of God, but, we are also victims of the ignorance of this world. It is a sad state of affairs that teachers attempt to teach children, any children, that the world has different levels of power, prestige, rights and privileges (it is worst when one specific group is targeted). By the way, what makes her think that Puerto Ricans don't pay taxes- to the IRS and to the Assessors office; or for that matter, that we are uneducated, illegal citizens who are violent people. There are always a few bad apples, but we have a beautiful culture that can best be termed " The Rainbow People". One last thought is that one wonders where she got her education and teaching credentials from. Is is the level of ignorance, bigotry and racism that is inherent in the educational system in Florida? I thought we had gotten past Dred Scott,Rosa Parks, Lolita Lebron and Albizu Campos, Emeterio Betances scenarios. Que viva mi gente!

The lady really hates all foriners and how can a person like her should concentrate in teaching and preparing our younger generations to become the future of this country. We need teachers that understand the importance of the education in general so our children don't have to suffer the way their have. Parents do a lot of sacrificing and put up with lots of discrimination from employers so their children get a proper education and a better future. Teachers like her do not belong in the class room.

It is to disturbing to try to understand the mentality or the reasoning of such a letter from the teacher in Orange County, Florida. I insults my beloved "Isla de Encanto" Puerto Rico, especially my Dad. My father was a teacher, with credentials from University of Puerto Rico. He studied hard and passed his knowledge of math and science to all his students especially to me.I was fortunate to meet some of his students while visiting and the constant message was " Mister Walker" was the best of the best educator around. I am a college graduate with the degree in Nursing and the only member of the family who is not teaching today. My family is primarily in teaching all with Masters and PhD's. That letter just shows how much "things" have not changed and we should "shout out" as loud as we can "end to the tyranny". Our kids need excellent role models not a group of racist teachers. Saludos a todos los Boricuas.

It is unfortunate to read that in her 28 years as a teacher, Mrs. Jan P. Hall never bothered to enrich her life and expand her knowledge by reading about other cultures such as the ones she mentioned in her letter. Mrs. Hall wasted 28 years of her life, by lacking committment, responsability and an oath to the profession she serves. Ethics is out of the question, for she has shown none. Love, compassion, charisma and a passion for her students is definitely absent. What was Mrs. Hall thinking when she chosed to be a public servant and educate the next generation? Did she believe that she can only teach "whites" and "blacks" like she calls them?...and what would she teach the black kids, who are also minorities? Mrs. Hall leads me to believe that she is not good on mathematics, statistics, economics and history, and she doesn't even take time to read the newspaper, if she did; she will know that as of 1985 the HISPANICS, OR LATINOS are a growing population in the United States. We are not only teaching in schools such as Sadler Elementary, but we are in government positions. Hispanics, blacks, and foreigners today are in positions of power and authority, and leading the nation. We are people that are not afraid of hard work, or starting from the bottom. We are people of great faith in God and we take hold of HIS promises. We are a BIG family that takes care of each other. We are people of simplicity, profound gratefulness, and we find favor-grace in other people's eyes. We are people of an open giving heart. We are people with burning desire and passion for education-we love books, so we get educated to leave a legacy to our children and grandchildren. My parents, didn't know how to write or read, yet thanks to them, I have a doctorate degree. Puerto Ricans are americans from birth. The University of Puerto Rico is among the highest ranking in education. Mrs. Hall, we are special people, learn from us, how to be a better person. I strongly believe that this teacher has violated the Constitution, the teachers Creed, the trust of many parents who left their children in her hands, and our nations values and principles. Mrs. Jan P. Hall does not deserve to hold such a precious privilege of educating the future leaders of our nation, her license should be revoke permanently.

To Don Jibaro, I think you put it best in your email, though everyones comments were right on. Keep being the mouthpiece here for Puerto Ricans, so that we can all be informed of the bigotry that still exists, though that was just one womans opinion. Someway, somehow, I hope she can come to her senses, and put her teaching credentials and mentallity to the proper use it was meant for. Forgive her Lord, for she knows not what she does.

Teacher Hall really doesn't know nothing about our Puerto Rican people, our culture and our education. She needs to go back to the University, of course, if she really went to a University, because the way she expressed about our Puerto Rican teachers and about our children, including the Haitians, Mexicans, Middle Easterners and foreigners in general shows that she only knows about the poor americans and blacks. Lady, sorry, but other countries out of the United States have better education than you, the americans and the black people. ALSO I PERSONALLY WANTS TO REMIND YOU THAT PUERTO RICO IS PART OF UNITED STATES, SO WE ALSO CONSIDER AS AMERICANS. I recommend teacher Hall to go back to Elementary School, because she don't need to study in an University to learn that Puerto Ricans are US CITIZENS too with the same rights that the americans and blacks. Hatians, Mexicans and other foreigners countries are people that come to this country to work hard in the jobs that the poor americans and blacks doesn't want to work. Teacher Hall shows that she have a racial discrimination problem and the government needs to take control over this matter because this affect our children and our countries. PLEASE PUT HER OUT OF SCHOOLS, SEND HER TO TEACH ANIMALS.

Sorry for this lady, the teacher. She is wasting her time and energies, inmigration will never stop. One of my responsabilities @ the University of Nebraska Medical Center is to educate faculty ,staff and students about the CLAS standards (Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services). Based on these standards, health care services will be provided to everyone with equality, and people with Limited English Proficiency will be protected with the right to obtain information, documents and services in their language. Several provisions were established to comply with this. My point is, we are working with people who feel, cry, suffer, eat, sleep, learn and love like we do. This teacher must put herself on the shoes of one of these discriminated persons. I'm sure she will not like the feeling. Can she imagine herself getting sick in another country and trying to get a prescription in a pharmacy where nobody speak English; or trying to get something to eat. When we serve people, we should look @ a blank face (no physical traits), assess their needs, determine the service to be provided, and then, get the personal data. This should be the rule for every agency serving HUMAN BEINGS.

I have been teaching for over 30 years in a low income community. A teacher needs to have compassion for her students. It isn't their fault that they were born to the race that they are. PTA helps me get them milk and cereal sometimes, new shoes, Christmas boxes with turkeys..Even the local Credit Union asks for names to bless the low income families with turkeys and toys! That teacher who dislikes Puerto Rican kids needs to find another job. she should not be in a Latino community. Better yet, get a job where she won't deal with the public...any public. She may need to go to Europe where there are pure WHITE people...maybe Australia..stay away from the Aborigines...maybe she should marry a rich man and NOT work at all. Seems to me that ANY place in the world has immigrants..America, being just that...a country of immigrants.

This is just outragous!!!! obviously this "teacher" has lost the will to teach. a person who becomes a teacher has the will to empower children thru knowledge to better their lives regardless of race. in fact they should be teaching children how not to be a racist since that problem already exists among the general population. she is only making an existing problem worse. for someone who is a rolemodel to many young and impessionable lives you just cant show and/or teach this kind of behavior or beliefs. yes we have freedom of speech but as a teacher you must know that that kind of behavior cant be tolerated. so thank you for you 28 years of service but you need to move on Jan! its people like you that ruin this country!!! instead of knocking all the bi lingual people in the country why wont you just learn spanish at least then you would be able to understand all the hurt and anger you have uprisen due to your selfish ways. the poor people of this country dont work because they dont want to. we make to easy for them to be on welfare, its not because hispanics/ foreigners are taking the jobs. in fact foreigners work harder then most of the people already here because thats what they specifically come here for. bottem line revoke her license we dont need people like her to teach our young and impressionable the down side of life; but to empower children thru knowledge.

I once heard a comedian say people complain about immigrants stealing their jobs and his response was what you want to ride your bike in the rain for $5.00 deliverying food?? Immigrants have it very rough in this country taking jobs sometimes 2 or 3 and some of those jobs many of us who are to spoiled on nice salaries woudn't want . And as far as her other comments well seems to me she is in the wrong field teachers should be colorblinded ,caring and compassionate well as you all know sooner or later the real truth always comes out.

This florida teacher thing is tough. just one example from my own experience, When i was in school i had a teacher who taught spanish class yet he openly debased and harrassed the spanish kids in his class. we complained but ultimately we had to deal with it and move on. I am of the belief that we as hispanics, and other races, need to at some point learn to ignore some of the crap that comes our way (some more, as if we haven't had enough already)and just live our lives in such a way that others see we don't fit the stereo types thrown at us. I think sometimes we use the media and public forums too much and we begin to look like we are whiners. sometimes the best response is no response, so as not to honor their ignorance with a response. On the other hand i also believe we need to be more vocal in some cases but with a more positive tone. Yeah, I myself would rather like to beat this kind of ignorance into the ground and show that we are a strong and proud people worthy of respect who will not stand for this kind of injustice, but that will only start a fight, an argument, and the only purpose in a fight is to win, which means someone has to lose. no one gets to learn anything and we don't get to fix a problem cause we become focused on winning, not fixing. when that happens, no one wins.

I think the teacher is frustrated by what he is seeing on a daily basis that is happening to his beloved Florida. Obviously he doesn't know how to express his feelings correctly. I'm also a teacher here in new york city, in Jackson Heights, where we have an influx of continuos immigrants from the carribean, south america, and now the middle east. Many come to start a new life and give their families an opportunity for a better life. Didn't our parents do the same??? Yes their are many issues that they bring with them as i deal with them as a teacher on a daily basis. At the same time i have taken the time, made the effort, to blend into their culture to better understand and help them not only now, but as a future Amerian citizen that will be productive in our society for years to come. I am Puerto Rican and teach fifth grade presently and have taught now for 19 years in the New York City Public School System. I can really share some good stories with you and all. Finally, I wish to remind Mr.Hall that , yes there will always be problems with immigration but remember the what they bring with them. Countless, invaluable skills, life experiences, and raw energy and motivation that has propelled this nation to be what it is today.

Don Jibaro, Saludos. You are right. We have a lot to thank Don Luis Muñoz Marín. He was a great man. But, we cannot deny that without the USA, we probably would not be so prosperous. Don Luis Muñuz Marín could have brought the independence for PR in the 40's. However, he did not. Why? Probably because he understood that it would have been a terrible mistake. He understood that we needed the USA alliance. Why is it so difficult for the "lefties" to admit that. No system is perfect. But, the USA Constitution is the greatest. You mentioned MS and AL. Those States had racial problems which lasted until not long ago. That is a sad part of USA history. I am sure that there are other reason (Economist may be able to provide some). Still, they are more prosperous than many places in Central and South America. People living in most of States have oppportunities and as long as people take advantage of those opportunities, people have a chance to improve their lives. People can move from AL or MS to other States as we do. If a State gets in economical trouble, it has the backing of the federal government. I do not think that it is a coincidence that PR is more prosperous than most of the other countries in Central and South America. In addition, it is a great feeling to know that by being part of the USA, we minimize that chance of being ruled by a dictator as it is with Cuba and Venezuela. Last, those "lefties" who still fantasize with seeing PR as an independent State, I do believe that it is too late. I think that the american way of living is there to stay. People won't give up what they now have including the freedom of traveling to USA when they wish without even a passport and all the benefits including "welfare" without paying "federal income tax." I hope that "lefties" like Faz Alzamora be defeated. Alzamora is so afraid of the USA alliance that even seeing English as one of the oficial languages bothers him. How unfortunate!!

Dear Fernando... We are prosperous because Puerto Rican leaders like Muñoz rivera and his son Luis, Jesus Piñero, Marinez Nadal, et al, fought hard... I MEAN HARD to bring a half fast equality to match us at least with the poorest US States... Mississippi and Tennessee. Even today, we have good men fighting USA Congress for some toppings to bring the PR economy up to par.I admit that US freed us form a worst tyrant, SPAIN... (look at my PR Memories 1898 cartoon) eventhough WE ALREADY had a "CARTA AUTONÓMICA" and were on the way to self government. BUT US kept us so damn poor, almost begging, from 1900 to 1948-52 when we finally were able to write our own laws and have our own people lead the government thus keeping some GPN for ourselves... Our military men have died for USA principles, we've given our best sugar, coffee and tobacco from our fields... our best went always to the USA appointed governors before 1948. WE'VE GIVEN blood, sweat and tears... WE DESERVE the BEST USA has to give!

Don Jibaro, You have an article on your web site titled "A Primer About Puerto Rico The Sans Usual Cynicism." You stated that we have come a long way....."Puerto Rico is fairly urbanized, industrialized and relatively properous, eventhough U.S. invaded and occupied Puerto Rico in 1898..." I may be wrong; but, I got the impression that you do not recognize that we are prosperous exactly because of the U.S. invation as you call it. We probably would be ruled by a dictator as it happend in other countries in Central and South America had not been for the U.S. Without the U.S. involvement, we would probably be a very poor country. Many people in PR have the illusion that we could have survived without the help of the U.S. Wake up PR. We have a lot to thank to U.S. Not to mention that it saved us from the Spanish.

Hello, everybody.

Just to let you know that we have information about the conservation activities of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean posted at our web site http://caribbean-ecoteam.fws.gov/. If you scroll down to the Rio Grande Office link, you will get to my place where we have information about our efforts to save the Puerto Rican Parrot. I am sure that there are plenty of Jibaros like me interested in the conservation of natural resources in Puerto Rico. Take care,

here's part II = Least happy 78. Russia 79. Armenia 80. Ukraine 81. Zimbabwe 82. Indonesia The Orlando Sentinel University of Michigan political scientist Ronald Inglehart, chairman of the survey, calls it "the Latino bonus." "They're not the richest people in the world," he said. "You seem to get a plus for being Latino." Inglehart says determining the reasons requires more study. But in Puerto Rico, at least, Enrique Rodriguez said he already knows. "We are a small island, and people are nice to each other," said Rodriguez, a retired government worker who lives in Old San Juan. "Everybody gets along. When we pass in the street, we say hello to each other. "We have our problems like everyone, but they're nothing like in Cuba or the Middle East. Even those without jobs have something to eat." Cavo, 22, a married father of two, stresses the importance of family. "We value friends and family a lot," he said. "I don't know other countries. But the meaning of what a family is seems to be a little bit different here. It's not just your wife and kids. It's your mom and dad, uncles, aunts, all the cousins, everybody who's got your last name." At the other end of the rankings, the former Soviet republics — Ukraine, Russia and Georgia among them — and the formerly communist nations of Eastern Europe, such as Romania, Bulgaria and Albania, are disproportionately unhappy.
