One thing I don't like is that when a puertorrican comes to USA and they do not want people to know that they are puertorriqueños. Those puertorricans that tells others that they are millionaire (s) . Those puertorricans that if you are not in their same class level wont even talk to you. Yes, we are in a Country where discrimination is "a la orden del dia", and then you have your own people discriminating against you for any stupid reason. I do believe that we all are brothers and sisters in God and we all shall respect and love everybody. Si somos puertorriqueños y orgullosos de serlo, aprendamos a respetarnos y aceptarnos unos a otros, y unirmos con ahinco, especialmente si nos encontramos en un pais que no es el nuestro. Dios los bendiga a todos

Well, first things first, hello to all of my Boricuas out there!!! What I hate the most is when people at school tell me, "If you like Puerto Rico so much why don't you go back there then?" I hate that, I'm here because of my education and I'm trying to get a better shot at my career for when I go to college (because you Boricuas know how the schools pver there in Puerto Rico are). And what I also hate is when Mexican people make fun of my accent; they always tell me, "Why do you talk so weird?" and then I tell them, "You have an accent too the thing is you don't notice it because you're used to it." I mean any puertorican that lives in Texas knows how Mexicans talk, they talk like as if they're singing. I mean if they got a problem they should just put their fingers over there ears and don't hear me then. Oh, and another thing is I hate when people, especially Mexicans, say, "You're Puertorican I thought you were white?" yeah, uh-huh, i'm a white person that can talk spanish fluently and have 3 Puertorican flags on my car, another one in my locker, another one on my necklace and even on my binder. I mean I have green-hazel eyes, long extremely curly hair, and well maybe i do look kinda white in my skin color but remember that we have black, taino, and Spaniard in us. So please my fellow Boricuas teach those dumb people out there who don't know nothing about us, and they think that Mexicans and Puertoricans are the same. I mean we speak the same language but we have 2 way different cultures. Well, peace out!! for now... God bless all my Boricuas out there. Dios me los bendiga!!! BORICUA 4 EVA!!!!

WHATS GOING ON MY FELLOW BORICUAS ONE THING I CAN'T UNDERSTAND ABOUT MY PEOPLE IS THAT WHEN THEY SEE A PUERTO RICAN WHO RESEMBLE A AFRICAN AMERICAN THEY AUTOMATICALLY ASSUME YOUR NOT ONE OF THEM WHY IS THAT? WHY DO PUERTO RICANS AND WHITE AMERICANS THINK THAT PUERTO RICANS ALL LOOK LIKE MARC ANTHONY? IT'S FUNNY CAUSE EVERY BOARD I GO ON THERE IS ALWAYS A FELLOW BORICUA TALKING SMACK ABOUT BLACK PEOPLE AND THESE ARE THE SAME BORICUAS THAT'LL SAY IN A CONFRONTATION THAT I HAVE BLACK BLOOD IN ME THAT DOES NOT MAKE SENSE. HOW YOU GONNA DANCE TO SALSA, SON, MAMBO ETC BUT YOU DON'T LIKE BLACK PEOPLE PERIOD? AM I A BLACK PUERTO RICAN NO, I AM A MULLATO MY MOM IS A BLACK PUERTO RICAN AND MY DAD IS A WHITE ONE OF SPANISH ORIGIN.I DON'T LOOK LIKE A STEREOTYPICAL MIX I LOOK JUST BLACK IM MEDIUM BROWN WITH CURLY AND COARSE HAIR I CAN CHANGE IT IN A AFRO AND MAKE IT CURLY WITHOUT CHEMICALS. 2. LIKE SOMEONE ELSE SAID BELOW I ALSO HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE THINK THAT PUERTO RICAN IS A RACE ALL BORICUAS AREN'T THE SAME EVERY ONE DOES NOT HAVE AFRICAN IN THEM AND EVERY ONE DOES NOT HAVE TAINO OR SPANISH IN THEM. 3.WHEN AFRICAN AMERICANS AND DIFFERENT LATINOS SAY I LOOK BLACK WELL I AM IN A WAY IM HALF BLACK THEY LOOK STUPID WHEN I TELL THEM THAT THERE ARE BLACK PUERTO RICANS IN PUERTO RICO. 4.ONE THING TO MAKE A RACIST MEXICAN MEZTIZO MAD TELL THEM ABOUT THE BLACK SEMINOLE INDIANS AND THE SMALL % OF IMPORTED SLAVES IN MEXICO YOU'LL PROBABLY NEED A KNIFE WHEN YOU TELL THEM THIS TRUTH. TELL MEXICXANS ABOUIT THIS-Today the Black Seminole community in Texas refer to themselves as Seminoles to set themselves apart from other Blacks and to emphasize the pride that they have in their unique history of having run away and resisted slavery. For similar reasons, the descendants living in Coahuila, Mexico, refer to themselves as Indios Mascogos, and in Oklahoma as Freedmen

To ARMANDO: Puerto-Rico will not obtain sovereignty for many reasons: one, it is NOT economically stable enough to stand on it's own, it totally depends on the U.S. economy, and to make it a state would be devastating to White U.S. politicians since it would be very powerful politically because of its size. Oh, and I don't understand why some P.R. parents don't teach their children spanish.

I have mixed feelings about my island to begin with, but I should say that because we don't seem to pull together or row together in one same direction - I did like to say that Puerto Rico should by all means achieve its independence from the mainland although it would be a very cheap action but fair for that group of people who does nothing by cry, bitch and moan about their status but really do exactly nothing about it. You are either with God or the devil but definitely cannot serve two lords at once. It is just amazing the way Puertorricans conduct business when it comes to obtaining monies from the mainland just because huracane "me limpio el joyo - me lo llevo to" however, we do not hesitate running to the gringos asking for FEMA funds to solve our problems, or asking money for education, school building, unemployment bennies, social security, medicare, college grants and a myriad of other financial aids. If we were a NATION THEN WE WOULDN'T HAVE SUCH NEED. Then I would say I can solve my own problems and not be dependent on on some other country which by the way the majority of PRs don't appreciate. We could start by being honest with ourselves and define our status, do it right and once for all. Oh! by the way, I left that little island because we are starting to eat each other alive, to get under each other skin, and with so little territory and no room to drive your car peacefully I decided to migrate to the Land of the Abundance - THE BEST COUNTRY IN THE WHOLE WORLD - THE U.S.A. land of opportunities. Puerto Rico better start thinking about building more high rise buildings just like Korea and other countries because come to think of it, I don't think we have that much land anymore and the entire island is beginning to shrink. So, how about if I leave you your little island with you high unemployment rate, political status not defined, drug users/dealers, prostitution, high incidence of HIV/AIDS, traffic jams, unfriendly people, corrupted politicians and cops, drunks driving while intoxicated, people not so respectfull of driving laws, youngters killing for drug territories, not so good drinking water, dirty beaches, rivers and lakes. I might go back in 25 years to see if you all are still crying about driving on the left lane, ect, ect. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR ISLAND AND REMEMBER, MAKE A DECISION ON WHO YOU WANT TO BE. Politically speaking that is.

To Torres, I’m grateful for what I have and the opportunities I have had bestowed upon me by our great nation, but I still doesn’t nullify the fact that Puerto Rico is one of the last remaining colonies in the New World. Sovereignty is all that is asked. There have been two plebiscites in recent history concerning the status of Puerto Rico. In both instances commonwealth status barely eked out statehood with independence lagging far behind. That only goes to show that the status quo prevailed. The passivity of our people reflects how others think of us. We can have pride in our rich culture and heritage, but can we really have pride in being exploited and patronized by the imperialist US? Peace to all my Latinos Unidos Quixote: "freedom…is one of the most precious gifts that the heavens has given man; it can not be compared with the treasures that the world holds…that the obligations of the…gifts received are restrictions that do not allow the free soul to rise. Fortunate is he who the heavens gave a piece of bread without the obligation of thanking any other but the same heavens!” Jimmy Cliff: “I’d rather be a free man in my grave, than living as a puppet or a slave”

What makes me sad is that our people don’t seem to recognize how Bless we are. This is geared to Puerto Ricans that have a mind set like Armando. You seem young or don’t have family that have educated you of the poverty that governed Puerto Rico before the United States came. It sad to see all the third world country that surrounds our Island. At one time that was our Puerto Rico. My family as other countless others in the Island suffered this poverty, sickness and disease. The U.S brought to Puerto Rico prosperity, homes and education to ALL!! Not only just the wealthy. In my family today we have an engineer, a teacher, and a lawyer and we all are Grateful and thankful for what the U.S did for Puerto Rico, and we are proud of being part of the U.S and being % 100 Boriqua. Puerto Rico independent never!!! thats my vote. Consejo…If we ourselves don’t exceed and desire excellence and a better life, we can’t blame anyone but ourselves. With the privileges we have that other wish they had it’s a wonder why were looked down because we haven’t realize how bless we are.

To James and Luis: I totally agree with your sentiments, but unless Puerto Rico has it’s own sovereignty, the people will remain sheepishly docile and ignorant of what it means to have their own nation, let alone identity. Did you know that Puerto Rico is the oldest colony in New World? Culturally, independence would end Puerto Rico's lifeless imitation of its colonizer, typical of colonies. It would release the full spiritual energies of a nationality whose self-esteem has been trampled on. It will also help break the stranglehold of the defensive, nativist, and sometimes suffocating insularism, many on the island have pursued as a refuge against assimilation. Puerto Rican independence would do more than stop the drain on the federal treasury. It would help the United States finally put an end to the contradiction of aspiring to be the leader of democracy worldwide while remaining the last colonial power. Colonialism denigrates the colonized, but it also demeans the colonizer.

I am slow to anger, very patient person, probably one of the most calm, cool and collect people you will ever meet. What gets me mad the most is ignorance. People who don't educate themselves either by receiving a higher education or simply opening a book or watching educational programs. Particularly, I can't stand when you tell somebody something that you know for fact and they say that it's not true, based on what they think or feel. And you try to explain you know this for fact, but they continue to argue their point with no credibility to back them up. Ughh. Can't stand that! And I can't stand people who when you say you are Puerto Rican and they automatically categorize you as being Mexican. "What's the difference?" Duhhhhhh!

What good is it to speak of Puerto Rico’s comparative wealth, when most of it came about by U.S. aid and incentives. Aren’t most of the corporations and factories foreign owned. How can we take pride in what is not our own. The billions in aid we get annually could come to a halt, then what would happen? What happens when these foreign owned corporations and factories relocate for cheaper labor? Only when the corporations and factories are owned by Puerto Ricans and we have fuller employment and lower welfare dependence can we be boastful. The Jibaros were known as a proud people with a strong work ethic. We desperately need to recapture that. The other Latinos will continue to think low of us if all they see is a group that is obsessed with partying. Pride that is built on what the U.S. has given us (aid, citizenship, ect) or in a few of our famous Ricans, is going to leave us feeling insecure.

Dominicans hate when us Boricuas play our Salsa and Bomba y Plena music. Also, they begin to say that Puerto Rico is a ugly Island but I tell them, yes, but why do you Dominicans have to take a boat and risk your lives to get to Puerto Rico? If Santo Domingo is sooo great, why the desperation to get to Borinquen...A few years ago i went to The Santo Domingo and it was so poor and crime is getting worst there as well, 3rd world country. I wanted to leave out of there as soon as possible. Now, when a Dominican start to talk bad about Puerto Rico, all I do is mention that i was in The Dominican Rep. and they put their head down on the floor and they keep quiet. James Martinez, amen to all you that you wrote. You know what I hate? "I didn't know you are Puerto Rican." "You don't act like one." Hey, I have the "mancha de platano" all over me. Simply because I chose to educate myself, raise my children in the suburbs doesn't make me a white man trapped in a Latino's body. I also don't play loud music out of my car or home to disturb others. Puerto Ricans have such an advantage over all other Latin immigrants and we waste them away on welfare and not taking education seriously. Get away from the poverty pimps (the Democrats). They want you dependent on their social programs to the point where you can barely exist and rely on them for everything. All it takes is a belief in yourself. Take pride in yourself by achieving what you can. El Senor gave you all the tools.

Well, Weel...quite an interesting topic! I was born in Ponce, PR and came to the USA(Massachusetts) when I was 10 years old...therefore, I am a "real" Boricua. However, I have three sons born and raised here in the USA. I have been living in Miami, Florida for 3 years; which has definitely made me quite unhappy - why?Because I have, unfortunatley, come across some so called "Boricuas" here that for whatever reason, deny that they are Boricuas...can you believe that? Even my son is extremely proud to be Borciua - like I heard him tell someone just the other day " I wasn't born in PR, PR was born in me!" I was at that moment so very proud of him. If you are Puerto Rican be PROUD to say you are! I mean, why would you want to be anything else???" For those of you out there that are like us, all I have to say is this: Be proud. Educate yourself. Pero no te deje joder de nadie....hasta la proxima...

We should strive to educate ourselves, own a home, start a business, and raise up God fearing children who keep our traditions. Our parents and grand parents came during a time that was not to welcoming for any Latin but they did ok for themselves despite discrimination they faced. But today you have something I truly hate. Puerto Ricans that come to the States and want to follow in the foot steps of the Black Americans. They want to walk, talk, dress, and and act black. Getting an Education, working hard to move up, sacrificing on material things to save for a Home or a business, these are called acting white. We are ostracized to keep it “real”. I see so many post on different Puerto Rican forums that talk about loving who they are but all they talk about is Salsa music and rice and beans. Is that all we are? If you love your People you would want them to be the best that they can be. The Cubans, Columbians, Venezuelans, and now even Dominicans are working and striving to pull themselves up, despite the fact that they have to deal with the not being citizens. But we who have an advantage in our citizenship squander it by wanting nothing more than to party and live off of Government hand-outs. I know that is not the majority of us but it is a very sizeable minority that other Latins notice it. Living here in South Florida I see how the other Latins are really doing well for themselves but I also notice how they look down on us. Some will say the other Latins are just jealous of our citizenship. I say they see to many of us throwing away the benefits of citizenship, and living in a way is making them look bad in the eyes of the non latin communities.

Mi suegra dice que los Puertoriqueño tienen mal genio y yo le digo: "well don't mess with me then" . My biggest peeve is when other spanish cultures either make fun of or try to correct my spanish. Who the hell are they that they think their spanish is superior to ours. If I don't want to roll my "R" when I say "carro" then I damn well won't or if I want to say "gua-gua" instead of "bús" I ain't here to please anyone. I once was told that Puerto Ricans were second to having the worst spanish (Mexicans being #1) and I asked them who in the hell made that statistic or did they just pull it out of a Cracker-Jack box. The way I see it, its like a different dialect. Every language has it. In English it is either a twang (country folk) or slang (ghetto talk bebe). People just need to lay off of our spanish and worry about their own. Mucho amor para mi gente Boricua!! Peace!!

My pet peeve is that alot of people say that they believe in GOD and wear the cross in some form of jewelry or tattoo. They continue to live a life that is unpleasing to GOD and the minute somthing goes wrong in their life then they call upon GOD. If you really believe in GOD and appreciate what he did for you on the cross then don't just step on the blood that he spilled for you. Don't let his death go in vain. Do something about it accept him in your life as LORD of your life and I guarantee that your life would change for the better. All HE wants is to be your friend and have a relationship with you. If you want to continue living your life the way you are doing then fine but don't complain when things don't go well. I hope I don't offend anyone but this is my peeve and I'm speaking in general this is not directed to anyone/group in particular. Remember GOD doesn't like hypocrits your either with HIM or not. There is no gray area. GOD BLESS YOU ALL.

¡¡VAYA BORICUA!! What makes me mad... Lest make a little list: 1. The idiots that have no idea how to drive, 2. The people that think that being a state is better (se creen que va a nevar en Puertorro), 3. The big amount of ignorance from the American public towards the Hispanic community, and 4. The fact that people mix what Latinos and Hispanos are. A little knowledge never hurt anyone... Latin America is every country south of the USA (from Mexico to la Patagonia). Hispanic America only includes those countries in which the "official" language is Spanish. I can say I was born and raised en la Isla and been on the states has make me realize what a "small" country we are. Although, what we don't have in landmass, we have it in the hearts of every Boricua that lives here but wishes to be there...

Those who openly say (unfortunately out loud) that they are "Boricua 100%" or "Boricua and Proud," then they act like idiots, don't want to work, or don't take care of their kids (they need to eat, dress, and have a little fun too). Pride is defined by ALL your actions (¿When was the last time you called you're Mom?). Show your pride with more than just a little flag hanging on your rear view mirror. BORICUA is not just the one that is born in the island, because it is the same "Sentimiento Por La Isla" that binds us together. We all love arroz con gandules, lechon con guineitos, pasteles y rellenitos, las parrandas, guiro y maracas. In New York there's probably more Banderas Puertorriqueñas in one city block, than the whole island. That's not a coincidence. That's identity. So Coño, stand up and Be Proud, Carajo.

Hola todos mis hermanos y hermanas BORICUAS. I was born in New York and raise in the Bronx and I lived 13 years in Puerto Rico. Let me tell you for being a NYRican I love mi isla. My mother made sure I grew up being PROUD of my race. I have done the same with my children. Puerto Rico has alot of crime, but at the same time esta progresando. You go to PR now and it's like being in the states. Y nuestra gente llanas de amor y humilda. And that's something that is hard to find here in the US. So this lady Cynthia from Texas, if you don't know your roots as of how Puerto Rico was and it is now. NO DIGAS NADA. Besides how can you compare Puerto Rico with Texas. At least in the island esta nuestra raza, in Texas lo que hay es un choro de REDNECKS que no nos quieren a nosotros los latinos. So I don't know what you're talking about girl.

There is always going to be a debate between all of us because that's what we are, a mix in the pot, different mixes, ideas and lot of views. The importance is that all of us are trying to improve our boricua society in a way or another. Keep it strong and be the best, not to opress others, but to show how valuable the boricuas are. Remember all the values from your abuelitos and ama a tu tierra. Sometimes I still dream with the coquis and a cookout of sopon in the river. God Bless Puerto Rico and the World!!! Hi, all my fellow Boricuas!

What makes me mad is people who write messages that doesn't have anything to do with the subject. Right here a lot of you have wasted my time. I'm browsing trying to find those that are keeping up with the subject and there are very few. Another thing that makes me mad is people that cut you off in traffic and then they go very slow. There's a reason why we have several traffic lanes and I'm always on the fast lane because I'm avoiding people like you, so if you are not willing to go a minimum of 10 miles ABOVE, I repeat, ABOVE speed limit, you belong on the slow lane. My husband was born in Utuado, I am of Greek and Irish heritage. What really gets to me is that nosy people assume that our last name is italian and when I gently correct them and let them know it is a hispanic last name, they AUTOMATICALLY assume it is Mexican... and to make matters even worse, when I tell them that my husband is Puerto Rican, their response is to wrinkle their nose and say "oh". Like there's something wrong with that. I am extremely proud of my hard working husband and made sure that our children were aware of their roots. I did such a good job of it that now two of the three will tell you they are puertorican and kind of forget about the rest. (lol) I have embraced his culture and made it my own. I learned to cook ALL of his favorite foods and during the holidays we listen to aguinaldos. To those who don't know the difference, la comida boricua does NOT include tacos or refried beans.

We were the only Puertoricans in our neighborhood. I was always being asked if I was a Mexican. It never offended me because I had good friends that were Mexican. I also had friends that were White, Japanese,African American and Samoan. I lived and still live in a melting pot of different cultures. My mother raised us the Puertorican way, she taught us our pride and culture and gave us our roots. She also taught us that there is no other race superior to ours and vice versa. People of all cultures have there Stuggles, Defeats and Accomplishments.Share your culture with other people and be open to learn about there's , you will be suprised to find out we all have some commonalities if anything we are all in pursuit of happiness. Love and Peace to all and God Bless.

Saludos a los boriquas!!! What makes me angry is when I go out, no matter where, people address me as a Mexican. What it's up with that? Just because we talk spanish, does not mean we all come from the southwestern part of the US. Hey I am proud to be a puerto rican.

First of all,God bless my boricuaaaas!!! second: to the guy who said that we are indios... Hey; we are Tainos, ok? And Tainos died because they were caring and loving, humble and trusting with strangers like you. I know lot of people who live of our kindness, and then stab us in the back, like you.And I don't like to say what I do, but you desserve it: My husband and I helped your people when they came here with one hand on the front and another in the back( that is a boricua slang, that means, they didn't have anything). We helped them get good jobs, pray for them when one of them had cancer. Helped with hospital bills, until he got better. and when he was " just fine" he backstabbed us; and leaved us with a broken heart. But I still believe in good people from your country or other countries, because my mom tought me to believe in people and be kind to everyone. And that is what Boricuas are made of; kindness and good hearts.viva Borinquen y los puertorriquenos de pura cepa aunque sean del Congo. And last but not least: I get mad when i see people from other countries without papers, coming here and using our flags in their cars to fool La Migra. Then when you see them, they don't wear " la mancha de platano" que se le ve a los boricuas no matter where are u from.

I can write about what makes me angry but I would rather write about a few things that makes me happy!!! 1. Felix "Tito" Trinidad performance last night. For those that watched the fight. WOW!! Lo que te perdiste!! It was evident throughout the fight, especially when Bobby Cruz sang the national anthem of Puerto Rico that there was no such thing as a Puerto Rican de aqui, de alla, de camiseta, half this, a quarter of this and that. Nooooo Senor this was a true display of the pride we have for our isla. 2. To all those Puerto Ricans/Hispanics/Latinos that have registered to vote for the upcoming November elections. As the largest minority we can definetly make a difference... 3. All of the Boricuas in the military serving proudly around the world and making a difference. You are our true ambassadors. 4. The Puerto Rico Olympics basketball team when they defeated the U.S. Although they did not win a medal this was the first defeat for a U.S. all pro basketball team during the Olympics. 5. All the websites that promote our people, history and culture. (www.jibaros.com, www.elboricua.com, www.topuertorico.com) etc 6. Finally having my website posted. My goal is to have it finished by the end of November. The site will be about la filatelia de Puerto Rico. Philatelic history of Puerto Rico. If you have suggestions or comments about the website you can e-mail me. WWW.CAPICU.COM Bendicion! Boricua hasta en la Luna!!

My fellow boricuas, I would love nothing more than to learn all of which i may possible from our culture, our people, those which are consider "veteranos" or "viejos de la vieja guardia", as I was taught. Their struggle, their beliefs to maintain that identity in which we are so proud of & w/pride identify our self as "Boricuas". I can honestly say that I acknowledge today a sence of resentment towards the "Americanos" & believe you me I do consider myself a citizen of this USA & pray for its protection & guidance for those that make the decision which impact some if not all of us. What I mean is that my people "el puerto riqueño" has been strip of its origin, its reason here, God given to be free, not in rule of a foreigner, we have been use and sold on the idea of a "idealism" or a "dream", man, my people were and many still are of a hard working nature. Many have also educataed themselves (not that we could'nt before the gringo came into effect)which can empower us to make decision and govern, be effective business people and lead our own country. In a way this great country (USA) is to blame for the social problems and economic difficulties in which our island is today and believe you me, we are in a social chaos, the CRIME, the disrespect that our youth bestows upon our island, the DRUGS that have torn our families and have ripped at the very essence of our society. The "vagancia" that has instill in some of us, you know that "free ride", "los cupones", "govermennt hand-outs", "wic programs" nothing of this is "FREE", our people have paid a price for this ... it has & continues to weaken us. Puerto Rico is in CHAOS and our forefathers would have done it differently, the difference lies in which they were never given the opportunities. Should you have reached this far in reading all I ask is for you to think before you say or act. Read, research, educate and VOTE, it is the only tool & or weapon which can bring about change for the future of our people, our "isla", the social economics which impact us all and @ best our God given right to hold on to our heritage and of our traditions.
