When i first heard about Centralia i fell in love with it. The poor town has now been trashed. I dont want any one to tempt to put this fire out. Its a historical site and one day i want my children and etc to see is and pass it on.

I first visited Centralia on my way up to my neighbors cabin in Sullivan County. We stopped and looked around I remember saying that it was really sad about what happened but it was really cool how it looked now and that I definetly wanted to go back and explore more of the old town and it's remains.

I passed through Centralia a few days ago 3/9/03. The town has become even smaller since I had seen it back during the winter of 93.

I am searching for any guidance on my ancestors who landed in the coal fields of Centralia PA. The 1900 census shows a large clan of Gaughans emigrated in 1884 to Centralia and neighboring village Byrnesville. I believe a good portion of this brood is as follows: Anthony and Mary (Wilson) Gaughan (born 1840 & 1853) Patrick and Julia (Dixon) Gaughan (born ____ & 1838) Edward and Rose Gaughan (born 1849 & 1849) Dennis Gaughan? Michael and Hanna Gaughan (born 1854 & 1856) William Gaughan (born about 1850s) Patrick and Honora Gaughan (born 1848 & 1851) Mary (Gaughan?) Ruddy (born about 1845) Bridget (Gaughan?) Barrett (born about 1845) I suspect that most of these are siblings. I know for sure that Anthony is the son of Anthony and Mary Gaughan. The hard part is the loss of the 1890 census! This brood was in the US for 16 years before they showed up on any census. I have not been able to trace what ship they arrived on, and can find nothing on them until 1900 (with the exception of marriage and birth records). Can anyone direct me on better ways to trace their paths? ------------------------- Now Anthony Gaughan and Mary Wilson Gaughan's clan includes the following children: Mary Gaughan Gillespie (born about 1865 - 68) Honoria (Nora) Gaughan Fallen (born 1865) Anthony J. Gaughan (born about 1873) Ann Gaughan Byrnes (born about 1873) James Gaughan (born about 1875) Patrick Gaughan (born about 1878) Philip Gaughan (born about 1879) Catherine Gaughan Monahan (born about 1881) Margaret Gaughan Laughlin (born about 1882) Anthony and Mary had a total of 11 children. I suspect this may be their child: Bridget Gaughan McAndrew (born about 1866) Their son, Anthony Joseph, is my great grandfather. He married Ellen A. Daley, of Centralia, and had six children: Anthony J. Gaughan (born 1897) Sarah Gaughan Smolke Harris (born 1899) Owen Gaughan (born 1902) Philip Gaughan (born 1906) Joseph O. Gaughan (born 1909) Mary "Mamie" Gaughan Tyson (born 1913) Joseph Owen Gaughan married Esther Rita Dropesky, of Mount Carmel PA, and had 5 children: Anthony J. Gaughan (born 1929) Virginia Gaughan Reilly (born 1930) Donald P. Gaughan (born 1932) Joleen Gaughan Yokemick (born 1936) Raymond J. Gaughan (born 1943) ------------------------------ If you have any info that can help me, primarily regarding the older generations, I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you! Eileen Cizewski

hey this nice that people can make so many pages for this once great place but still is.. In all these pictures i have seen of the town i yet never seen a good pic.. These are all great but everyone talks about the trategy. If you go to centralia now on the main road when you ge to left if your leaving mount carmel and you will see something new. The people of that town loved it so much they put a sign on one of the Trees shaped in a heart saying "we love Centralia" in it. Its the greatest site you could possibly see.. I hope many of you people that come as tourists look beyond the mine fire and about its history of the people and how much they cared and still do..

Just visited Centralia yesterday and had to do a search to find out more information! We were staying at a Locust Lake State Park and noticed it on the map... we both thought this was a very interesting place to explore and even picked up some dead branches for fire wood that night.

Centralia seems like a great town.I think more people should check out Centralia.I did,I thought it was great.I never found any trouble parking and I really like those cracks in Main Street, but my brother in obsesive compulsive and supersticious he was all to pieces.I think every town should have a coal fire.

What a shame for a beautiful town! It's an eerie experience driving down abandoned streets that go nowhere! Good luck to all who remain!

I just read the part about Centralia in Bill Bryson's book, "A Walk in the Woods," and had to look this up. It is indeed fascinating, and it's a wonder Hollywood hasn't been using it for years. It just cries out for scenes from "The X-files" and the like. They're afraid of possible cave-ins probably. It would be like falling into a simmering volcano. Bryson mentions that there's enough coal underground for Centralia to burn for 1,000 years. So no doubt eventually surrounding towns will be burning too. Eerie. In Canada, the "best disaster," if you could call it that, that I've seen is the Frank Slide, in the bottom left-hand corner of Alberta, minutes from B.C. A portion of a mountain thundered down and buried most of the town of Frank in the middle of the night. Most of the rubble is still there; there's too much to move. I've seen it, and it's quite something. Thanks for the pictures.
