I happened to stumble upon this movie on the Sundance Channel one evening. It immediately made its way onto my list of favorite movies of all time. What is most surprising is the reason behind why it is so superb. Unlike many movies today, there are no special effects and few action scenes to speak of. The weight of the movie’s plot is carried solely on the shoulders of the two lead actors, Bill Sage and Bill Dawes. Bill Sage turns in an over-the-top performance as Officer Morning…a wild cowboy/take-no-prisoners-type of cop. He arrests people first and asks questions later. In fact, I suspect Mr. Sage had a lot of fun playing this role. However Bill Dawes, who portrays Officer Francis, has the more challenging job of keeping pace with Bill Sage’s performance without becoming overshadowed or upstaged by it. Mr. Dawes keeps pace beautifully and both actors play off each other to perfection. I really would have believed that they were true cops. Bill Dawes is absolutely phenomenal in his understated role as Officer Francis…..a sensitive, recently transferred cop struggling to find his way and adjust to the wild ways of his newly assigned partner. Bill Dawes brings a certain vulnerability to a character unlike any contemporary actor I can think of. He has a special knack for being able to portray a wide range of emotions, but is particularly talented in expressing pensive, melancholy, and fear. This is especially evident in the second half of Chapter 12 (A Close Encounter) when Officer Francis comes face to face with a boy in a laundry room who has a gun pointed directly at him, immediately followed by a scene later that evening when Francis is seen alone in his apartment reflecting on his earlier near-death experience. There is very little dialogue in these two scenes, yet I was able to feel Officer Francis’ fear/sadness/frustration/loneliness/pain/shortcomings etc. Most importantly, Mr. Dawes is able to convey these emotions through his expressions and body language in less than 2 minutes and without ever saying a word. Being able to do this is acting. Being able to do it as well as he does is TALENT. One of the biggest mysteries of modern times is how Mr. Dawes has not had more success as a dramatic actor. I have a feeling we are going to be seeing a lot more of this highly talented actor in years to come…..

My grandfather was a cop, and I've always thought about becoming one. This movie depicted everything I dreamt and feared about being one, but in the end, I came out thinking more positively about it, and I just might go into it. This was definitely one of the best cop movies I've ever seen, I'd say on par with Dark Blue, and WAY better then anything else I've seen. I'm so glad that my roommate got bored flipping the channels and decided to stop on IFC so we could see it! Seriously guys, way to go. Fucking unbelievable.

This movie blew me away. I have been a cop for 8 years, and this movie is dead on. I have been telling anyone who will listen to see it. Even bought a t-shirt. Keep up the good work.

I rented Evenhand thinking,"This is probably really cheesy but it'll BE fun MAKING fun of all the unrealistic, stereotypical baloney that cop movies always are." About 2:30 am that morning having watched the entire director's commentary and re-watched most of the movie a 2nd time, I was completely enthralled by the film. It's shockingly realistic - I've been a police dispatcher in a midsized Texas town for 4 years - and so wonderfully anti-Hollywood. I can't congratulate you enough on this project and how you brought life as a cop to the screen with such dirty conflicted funny boring terrifying realism. I loved how the film was so multi-layered:a character study within a drama within a buddy flick within the so-called good cop/bad cop scenario. As you watched all your preconceptions just keep getting peeled away like the skins of an onion until - just like the real cops I know - everybody has surprised you. I loved all the little threads running through it - the ducks, the signs, the Dale Earnhardt stuff, the mural especially. And the music, don't get me started. Well I'm gushing but I can't help myself. I'm telling everyone I know about this film, it's a piece of art.

the movie was a realistic portrayal of the everyday duties of the street cop. we are underappreciated and underpaid and this movie allows the public to get an inside look into the everday hazards of police work. THANK YOU MADDOGG

I really enjoyed the movie. As a deputy in Texas, I could relate to Francis and Morning, and the boring routine patrol, which can be broken up at any second by a hot call.

Great Movie! Totally interesting from start to finish. Evenhand showed me what it's like on the other side of the radio. Like a good book, I was a little sad when it ended. Awesome job guys!!

I watched your movie three times already-----and am having to beg the deputy that i borrowed it from to extend my borrowing time so that i can watch it one more time. Surely i must buy it for myself! It is one worth watching numerous times and i can't thank you enough for making a real cop movie. I've been an officer for 20+ years and have seen these guys everywhere! I knew the kid was going to kill him but just didn't know when------and then i found out that he was a she in real life and had to keep expressing to the loaner deputy how great an actor she is. blows my mind when non-cops get real-cops right.

Having been a police officer for the past eight years, I found Evenhand to be one of the most realistic cop films I've ever seen. The dialogue was bang on: I thought that I was watching recordings of my own conversations with partners at work. Sure there were some flaws (Morning has both a straight stick and an expandable baton?) but the research really payed off...there's no doubt that the filmmakers really knew their subjects. Congratulations on a job well done.
