Is there any CD's done by Jarrelook. I would be interested in obtaining any copies of them. . . . REPLY FROM JARRELOOK... No, I am sorry but there are no plans to create an official CD at this time as we are essentially a live band and have not made any formal recordings of our work due to the difficulties of arranging royalty deals with Mssr. Jarre's management. And unlike another outfit we know of we will not do an illegal CD release for our monetary gain as we feel most strongly that Jean-Michel's work should be acknowledged fully as such and should earn him money even if it is us playing a particular song on a CD or DVD. Naturally there are recordings of us playing taken from our mixer however they cannot be released until a formal deal is looked into with his management and at this time we do not feel sufficiently happy with those recordings in terms of quality. So I'm sorry but no, there are no CDs at this time. Thank you very very much for having the faith in our work to ask... we feel most flattered that you have taken the time to write to us in search of recordinsg of our work. Best wishes....

Hi Jarrelook, I am attempting to build a laser harp for my students...I am attempting to get some of my kids interested in music and thought that the harp may be a good idea, it's different anyway! I would be very grateful if you could advise me as to the sensor(s) that you are using to detect the beams being broken and where I could source this/these. If you would be willing to 'share your secrets', I would be most grateful. Cheers, Paul.

I like yous lot and i think after listening to your samples that you are the dogs balerics at playing jarre. me, I just use my jarre cd's to mix like a dj. but i do like jarre an awfull lot. I have a programme on the internet radio station icrfm.co.uk and if you have any material that you would like broadcast to the world, on LP, CD, TAPE OR MD, provided it has no swearing on, I would be more that happy to get your recreations of jarre heard, Because I believe they're good enough. Id also like to meet you lot one day and talk Jarre and Stuff. I simply have to see your laser harp and maybe have a go. You can tell from my email address that i like laser harps. I did a presentation about Jarre To around 50 people, for which i would love to have had a laser harp and a theramin. YES, i am the one that emailed ages ago saying to impress women. But i just had my own synth, a yamaha cs2x if you want to know, and pretended to play oxygene 13 by secretly having a cd player under the table! And i got passed. and i also wrote a five page essay about how i got seduced by the world of JMJ.

Great and interesting page you have here. Looked through every single part of it now and finds it and you work as an extremely nice peace of work.

My self I have always wished to start a Norwegian band to tribute JMJ music but havent had the time or right chances yet. Most interesting I found your laserharp, a piece of instrument that I have always wanted to have a replice of my self - could you be so kind and give me some hints and tips how I can construct one?

Also, keep up your good work despite critisism from people not been able to manage what you have done.

Best regards

I'm listing to one of my many JMJ albums right now and I was also *very* happy to see that you've used my program, Reptile, to do many of your backgrounds! Yes, I wrote that thing Want proof ? On the help->about screen hold the shift key down and right click in the white areas of the form. You should see a pic of me and my (now) wife and a little message to the world

Thanks again for your dedication to this great music.

First up id like to apologise for enterering my last entry into your guestbook 500 times. im sure youve been on a slow computer and you keep clicking it and then it decides to work. if i could wave a magic wand and reduce them to one entry only, i would but you know how it is. and now with the plesentries over with, here comes the main course...now that im on a faster computer, with windows xp, i was finally able to listen the sound bytes. and i dont care what the jarre purists say, those samples sounded perfect to me. and it made me decide that one thing i must never stop trying to do and something that i will always want to do is come and see you live. i wish i lived in preston. because i would camp outside the hall between now and the big night.

Ok the first thing is you have a laserharp! OMG! you have achieved one of my dreams. it is something that ive always wanted to own and one day i will. yeap, a laserharp and a theramin. see, i did a small presentation on jarre and when i think back i also imagine what it would've been like to have had a harp and a theramin. purly just to impress the women that i fancy that were in the room at the time!
well, at least i am a bit closer now however to owning, knowing a price and a maker.
and also your upcoming performance in lancashire. Its a tad too far from me but the thing is i would really love to see you lot in action. ive never seen jarre himself, because ive only been into him since about 2002 but i do jarre dj sets with the 20 or so cd's i own. and i can make you a demo mix cd and post it if you really really want. i really need to hook up with other people who are into this music and appreciate it aswell. Here in ipswich however we have a good hall. its called the corn exchange. maybe one day you could perform here. or somewhere in london.
if you ever want to sell your laser harp in the distant future then just email me. but i doubt you will. i wouldn't. also here in ipswich ive thought how good it would be to do a jarre type concert using the buildings in the bit where the town square is. we might not be able to fit a million people in there but it would be better than staying in a watching the crap tele i spose. Long live jarre.

Hi, I've just come across your site and your work for the first time and I'm very interested in the way that you reproduce your versions of Jarre's music. From the soundbites I heard, you sound very accomplished and get the feel of the music very well.
I get immense pleasure "trying" to play Jarre's music on my 1 (one!) synth so I can imagine how it must feel to recreate the music with all that kit!
Good luck for the future, and come down Lichfield way soon!

Hello Jarrelook, an interesting site I may say, and a lot of effort put into it. It is also good that you're still learning to play Jarre's music, of course I like Jarre only up to Zoolook though, I gave up listening to him after that album. I have seen the man myself during his oxygene tour here in the UK in Glasgow which was fantastic, during my time i have seen Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk etc. I myself am an electronic musician and have released a couple of CD albums so far, of course I am improviser, where the process of reading and writing music is tossed out of the window. Of course you cannot get close to sounding exactly like Jarre which is good thing, because people start labelling you plagiarists, copycats who can't play anything else but Jarre, I don't know if you have tried doing your own music, maybe you should and perhaps bigger doors will open for you in the future as they have for me. I wish you all the best of luck in the future. I am looking for the music scores for the original oxygene album (1976) but the music book is out of print, can you help.

don't look back - look forward

I've been a Jarre fan since I first encountered him via an article in Keyboard Magazine in 1986. I had no idea there were tribute bands doing his music. I think it is a wonderful idea. I've longed for years to put on a show here in my hometown of his music, but the expence would be...overwhelming! I've got the musical gear to do it, just not the lighting, projections, pyrotechniques, lasers, and whatnot. But the dream is a lovely site to fantasize about. Hope I get to see the big guy in concert some day. I wish you guys all the luck in the world. PS. Have you released any recordings of his or your own compositions? If so, how can one obtain them?

I have listened to the music you put on the site, you do quite well

I have been Jarre fan since the mid 80's i love his music very much and i found some more artists like Delerium and Brian Eno, just do your thing and have fun playing, two thumbs up.

Henry

REPLY FROM JARRELOOK...
Thank you very much for your kind comments Henry, they are much appreciated. Without the support of people such as yourself we would never bother to play Jean Michel's music other than at home. Your support and that of many others makes it all worthwhile.

Just found your site by chance and was impressed by the clip I heard, and the dedication and hard work you put into the band. I work as a session keyboard player and lecture in Music Tech in Bristol and know some of the problems you face re-creating such complex music. Exact and pedantic renditions of covers are not what you seem to be about, but capturing the spirit and joy of the music, which is what its all about. The gigs look great! Let us know if you ever come down to Britol.
Regards, Paul.

Hi M and T,dont worry about the criticism even if you had the exact instruments and created the songs precisely you'd still get people complaining that you forgot some minute detail out!!!! like you missed a bleep out in the chorus part or something!!!!!thats just human nature people will always criticise cause they are jealous of something that they wished they could do themselves and so attack you !!!the way you play jarres music is down to your own perception on his music!!just keep doing what your good at and enjoy it because you want to,you still have a good fan base!!!!

Hello, i listened to your sound bytes and i must say that they were a bit disappointing seeing as you have THAT MUCH equipment(i wish i had so much gear!), the sound wasn't very authentic...
Nevertheless, keep on going!

REPLY FROM JARRELOOK...

Thank you for your comments despite the feedback being somewhat negative in nature. As we say on our website on the "Who Are We" page we do NOT try to get the absolute exact sound of Jean Michel's original numbers, rather we get as close as we can without being too pedantic. And despite what you think to the contrary we do NOT have sufficient gear to be able to get much closer. Check our list and I think you will find the Fairlight CMI, PPG Wave, Memory Moog and Prophet 5 to be missing - not a Korg in sight - not to mention various ARPs such as the 2500 and 2600, Odyssey etc. and the EMS VCS3 and AKS. You won't see an Elka or Farfisa organ in there either. Consider that Jarre has been creating music on record since before 1973 and you can perhaps appreciate that he has had a whole host of instruments in that time, many, many of which have a quite unique sound, totally accurate synthesis of which is not possible with modern instruments. We get as close as we can with what we have and rather than being pedantic about the timbres we concentrate our efforts in different directions, notably in our visual presentation of the music. And we never rip riffs or small sections of his work from recordings and use them in our versions, unlike one outfit I could mention. Consider also that Jarre himself does not often worry too much about his choice of timbres in a live environment - for example I have heard a live version of Oxygene Part 4 on CD which was a long way adrift from the original in timbral terms, so much so in fact that our version is actually far closer to the original. Finally you should take into account the fact that the sound clips you have listened to are live recordings from past shows, NOT studio re-works of Jarre originals. If we were ever to record a CD of "covers" then we would have the luxury of being able to record in multiple takes, not all in one pass as has to happen live. In other words when playing live we have to use say a Roland JX10 because one of our Moogs is already being used at that point. If you wish to hear Jarre's work live and totaly timbrally accurate then you should look out for the next opportunity to go and stand in 3 inches of mud and watch him mime to a playback. Failing that might I be so audacious as to suggest you listen to one of his CD's whilst standing in a polder in the rain waving a laser pointer about? A few fireworks might heighten your experience as well. ;-)

I'm glad I followed the link from the main Jarre web site and found you were playing in Preston last night (30/11). The concert was great. I presumed that it would be just music, but with the visuals/laser effects/lighting, it was even more of a tribute to the great man.

I hope Lynsey has more involvement in the shows in future - someone with her talent shouldn't just dance for the majority of the concert at the back of the stage.

Good luck on all future endeavours - I have only just found out about you today to be honest and would love to come to the gig later in the year but Preston is just a bit too far. Do you have a CD? Wouldn't mind hearing all your tracks in full. When I get the time I like to do a bit of Jarre-ing myself but dont get all that much these days. Keep up the good works and keep the Jarre thing going. Hello Martin,

I'm sorry about my harsh critique, but nevertheless that's my opinion.

I compose electronic music myself and I also made cover versions of titles by JMJ - that's why I'm such pedantic.

Good luck.

Hello guys,

your cover versions sounds absolutely ridiculous! Especially "Quatrième RendezVous" - you played the wrong notes! Urgh!

"Oxygene 8" sounds ridiculous, too - the synthesizer sounds as cheap as dirt! And "Calypso 2" - pour l'amour de Dieu! MY EARS!!!

Finally I want to say that on this planet are better artists who covered the music of JMJ (and other electronic musicians). Especially ONE: the Dutch synthesizer man ED STARINK - well-known with SYNTHÉTISEUR Les plus grands thèmes series.

Search google.com or altavista.com for "Ed Starink" and buy his CDs!

And yes, you are quite correct, there are notes which are wrong in Rendez-Vous 4, that is because we have tried to learn 22 songs in a little under 2 years to stage our show, a lot. And we are still constantly learning, constantly changing, and I hope improving how and what we play. But in learning I particularly have learnt to play some parts incorrectly and once learnt in a certain way it takes time to correct them for you will always tend to go back to what you have imprinted on your mind whilst learning. The version of Rendez-Vous 4 that you hear on the site is actually the fourth version we have done and each time it has been changed dramatically. Right now I am more worried about the lack of dynamics I perceive in one section as we cannot use our Synthex live due to reliability problems and it is lacking for want of this instrument. I hope you believe me when I say we play Jean Michel's music with much respect for it means very much to us. And with that said it is extremely important that we put right where we are wrong, and we are constantly trying to do this. So... offer us your opinion on how may we do it better but please do NOT make comments like "the synthesizer sounds as cheap as dirt"... without going on to tell us why it sounds that way and how we may then make it sound better. We know it is not the same timbre as on the recording but then we have not tried to offer our audio clips as exact copies of Jean Michel's work, nor as re-mixes, rather we have tried to play them as best we can live... these are not studio recordings or even sequenced versions, they have been played live. And to create the exact sound of Jean Michel we would need far more money than we will ever have for the correct instruments and far more members in the band. We try to make a show that will give people some taste of the master's music and if they then go to see a real Jean Michel show then it only serves to make us happy that in some way we have helped to spread the word. Please also be aware that we make no money from our tribute band, any small amount we make above the cost of staging the show goes straight back into buying equipment. I say this to illustrate that our money is not endless to buy the equipment to get the EXACT sound. So... thank you for your comments however strong they are. We are not happy that you seem so negative but we value your comments none the less. Regards, MartinF.

I like your sound and the gigs sound amazing! I'll have to get to one of your next ones. I can't believe you are saying that Calypso is dodgy to play, it's easy! Anyway you're making me want to get my own Jarre tribute band together... Anyone out there interested?
