I am looking for information on my uncle WILLIAM A. BECK JR. a pilot who flew with the 15th AAF in 1944. his plane was shot down during one of the Ploesti raids in May 1944. The Plane went down near the Bulgaria, Yugoslovia, Bulgarian border. As I understand it his plane had seveloped engine trouble on the way to the target and had turned back when he was attacked by German fighters. My uncle was killed but several of his crew members managed to bail out and were later captured. He was from San Antonio, TX and received his wings at Marfa, TX. He was buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetary after WW II.All his military records were burned in the St Louis fire so we have nothing that tells us about his military service. If you knew him I would appreciate hearing from you.

My husband found your web site in March of this year. My Dad, Eugene W.("Snuffy") Smith Jr. was a pilot with the 746th BG. We saw his name on the "Unknown" list and I sent off a message to Mr. Riley at the end of March. Dad passed away on May 25, 1996. He never spoke about his time in the war to me, but did mention a few things to my husband. Dad flew B-29's during the Korean War, and we're not sure if the name of his plane (Eileen the Flak Queen) was for his B-24 aircraft or the B-29. I was not the Eileen, it was my Irish grandmother the plane was named for, since I arrived after the war. If there is anyone who may have known my Dad, any information would be appreciated. Dad spent over 25 years in the Air Force, retiring as a Lt. Col. in June 1967 from McChord AFB. Thank You for your web site.

It is with great sadnes and a heavy heart, that I have to report the death on 5/9/05 of Major Edwin J. Purvis. Major Purvis was an active member of the 456th Bomb Group and attended several of the Groups reunions over the years. He flew 52 missions{we believe} in his b-24 named "Mislaid", the nose art was of his future wife, Carol. He is survived by his wife of over 50 years Carol Purvis, three children Jim, Sharry, and Lynn and a number of grandchildren, and one great grandchild. This sad message is being sent to you by his son in law Rod Martin, Ed was one of my Heroes as were all the men and women who served their country in WW-2. Anyone who knew Major Purvis or family members of his crew may contact me martrods@netzero.net and I will pass along any messages to his family. Thanks, Rod

My dad was in the 456th bomber group based in Italy as a flight engineer and gunner. He passed away in 1996. I have numerous photos of crews and planes but none have the nose art visible. Just curious if anyone else has an interest or can help me to identify what my Dad's plane may have been named and any other crew members can be indentified.

I´m looking for information concerning a B-24 that crashed down 5-10 km´s east from Bad Voslau. In the 29th mission from the 456th B.G.-Bad Vöslau hat been bombed on 12th April 44. I expect that it could be the ship #41-28635 (MACR 4085) but I´m not sure. I would be very grateful for any information concerning the crash from this plane / the plane who crashed down there. (The MACR isn´t exact enought) Thanks for your help!

My dad (M/Sgt Theodore McCarson) is listed as status unknown in your directory of members. He passed away in February 1999. He retired from the Air Force in 1973 as a Chief M/Sgt. I would love to hear from anyone who has stories or remembers serving with him. He told many stories about serving among the olive trees in Italy during the war. Please email me. Your site is well put together and it is heartening that those who served so honorably will be remembered.

Message to Craig Glassner: The airplane "Gin Rae" was in the 746th Squadron of the 456th Bomb Group while I was there and she survived the war. I was a top turret gunner and was there when the war ended. I flew only six missions, the last four with our crew. My second one was as a tail gunner with another crew in Gin Rae.We were in the "tail End Charlie" position. She acquired two more flack patches that day. While I was there only one airplane was lost and it was not Gin Rae. She, in all probably, wound up in the airplane bone yard in Tucson, Arizona. ----Doyle Fillers

My husband and I are traveling to Italy and Switzerland next month (May 2005). We plan to visit the Cerignola area as well as Chur/Praden, where the Lady Patricia crashed in November 1944. My uncle, Harlan Hatfield, was navigator. The crew all parachuted to safety. Are any of that crew reading these messages and in the group that visited the Switzerland site several years ago? If so, I would like some help finding the site where the plane crashed, located above Chur. Thank you!

On page 2 of the Nose Art section of your website (http://www.456thbombgroup.org/noseart2.htm) I noticed the following (photo) entry: ""Gin Rae", an aircraft of mystery. While indisputably flown with the 746th Bomb Squadron in early 1945, she apparently was the same aircraft that was MIA from the 376th Bomb Group, 512th Bomb Squadron, on July 3rd, 1944 (MACR #6762). Watch for this to be clarified soon." My father, Raymond Glassner (deceased) was a mechanic on the Gin Rae. I saw many photos of it in an album my father put together which I used to view as a child growing up in Akron Ohio in the 1950s-60s (my dad hid it, as several photos, hidden behind other mounted photos, were of crashes and crash victims - I asked my mother about the photos recently and she thinks my dad eventually threw out the more graphic photos). Sadly, I cannot ask him about this, but I believe the Gin Rae did make it through the war. As I recall, Rae was the name of the pilot's wife, and Gin was, well, gin. Dad took numerous photos - I believe he developed and printed them himself - and I hope to get them from my mother in the near future. Once I get a chance to scan them, I will contact you, as I would like to share them (and preserve them).

My father was a prisoner of war, he was captured in Tobruk in Eygpt and ended up in brux via Italy. I was talking to him today as he was fiddling with his new digital hearing aids( as he is nearly deaf through the joint bombing by the R.A.F and Americans )and he told me that all the prisoners were forced to work in the oil refineries. He was liberated by the Russians and flown to France by the Americans and eventually arrived back in England. It was hard to get him to talk about it after all these years ( he is now 85 ) I am glad I found your website so I could learn a little more of the horror he must of gone through.

I'm the nephew of Robert E. Miller, who was a pilot with the 456th. I found a photo of him with the rest of his crew (including John Dengler, who was killed in action, and Bill Neale and Martin Bernstein, who were wounded by flak) on Page 3 of your Photo Gallery. Many thanks to you for keeping these memories and the powerful lessons they provide alive. I am researching U.S. citizens who served with the RAF RCAF during WWII. After Pearl Harbor many would transfer to the USAAF including 456 BG personnel Calvin Hall and George Jess Gullick. Any other names/information would be appreciated. Please contact: wpf13@hotmail.com
